The Norman Laud Short Break Home provides a diverse range of services for children of all ages with profound learning difficulties and complex physical and health care needs.

  • The Short Break Home can accommodate 12 children overnight
  • Families can use the Short Break Home’s services both on an occasional and regular basis
  • A day care service is also available
  • Each child is treated as an individual and is encouraged to reach their full potential
  • New skills are taught such as cooking and artwork to promote each child’s independence
  • Each child has a care plan which is needs-led and subject to regular reviews
  • Emergency facility often available at short notice
  • Uses Makaton Sign Language and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
  • Highly skilled and trained staff, many with NVQ Level 3 and 4 qualifications
  • A diverse staff group representing many different cultures, many with bi-lingual skills

The Norman Laud Centre has superb indoor and outdoor facilities for the children and young people in an environment that stimulates them and provides a positive social experience, whilst away from their families.

  • Nine bright airy bedrooms including two soft padded bedrooms
  • Large bathrooms with both standard and specialist equipment
  • Various lounges for both fun and quiet activities
  • Wide variety of indoor activities with games and equipment that promote cultural awareness
  • A dedicated sensory room
  • Pool table, karaoke machine, play stations and computers
  • Large soft play room including ball pool
  • Large activity room for arts and crafts
  • Large garden for ball games and BBQs
  • Specialist playground with adapted swings, slides and roundabout
  • Large leafy garden area for picnics and exploring nature
  • Meeting room for parents, professionals and staff training

Short Break Home Activities

The children and young people are taken out regularly and benefit from the centre’s excellent relationships with local community groups. The Norman Laud Association minibus also provides the opportunity to go to such places as:

  • Local parks and woodland areas
  • Theatres and cinemas
  • Nature reserves and children’s play areas
  • Bowling alleys
  • Birmingham airport
  • Birmingham’s Sea Life Centre
